Grapple picking

Dear sisters,

Only 2 out of the 5 of us got to go on the annual Buckwalter grape and apple picking day this year! Janna and I put together some photos from the day so you three that were missing can get a glimpse of the wonderful day that it was.

It was a beautiful fall day. We ate lunch at Keuka Lake State Park.

We went apple picking first. Here I am standing around eating an apple while everyone else picks.

Then it was on to the grapes! The kids really enjoyed helping with the picking.

A whole lotta Concords. Makings of delicious juice and jam, right there.

This guy grazed nearby. He may look innocent but he was huge, and kinda scary when he came close to the fence.

It was, as usual, one of the highlights of fall for me! Now we have a lot of fruit to process and not much time to do it in. Tonight we managed to do two batches of juice–6 jars of Concords (purple) and 6 jars of Niagaras (white). This weekend we’ll do jam and applesauce and apple butter. And more juice. As usual, wish you were all here to crowd the kitchen with me and chat while we work together. Why are we all so busy? And why do we live so far away from each other?

Much love to you all,

Rachel

  1. Love the pictures and the captions! Wish we could have been there. I’ve been really craving concord grapes, I asked around and no one knows of any local growers around La Crosse. My loss! If they’re here, I will find them though! I need my fall grape fix!

  2. I love the cheesy grins, and the picture of the box of grapes made me long for home! We picked loads of apples this week for free from a neighbor and Bradley and I have been making loads of apple sauce to put in the freezer. It smells like home 🙂 No grapes to be had here though, I think it would be much too wet and windy for them. Wish we were there, miss you!
